GMC Invited to Become Foundation Member of Melbourne Mining Club

In further recognition of the GMC Global ongoing focus and contributions to the global mining industry, GMC Global has been invited to become a Foundation Partner of the Melbourne Mining Club.

Over the last 3 years GMC has been actively involved in supporting the ‘not for profit’ premier mining industry forum. “It is an absolute honour and privilege for GMC to be invited to become a foundation member of the MMC. Sharing the foundation membership with global mining companies like BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Newcrest Mining and key Mining Financial and Services Corporations, recognises the GMC’s passion and exclusive focus for assisting the mining industry with sustainable improvements”, commented GMC’s CEO Irek Stawiczny.

 About Melbourne Mining Club:

The Melbourne Mining Club (MMC) is arguably the premier forum for profiling leadership of the global minerals industry. Founded in 2001, it is a not-for-profit organisation established to promote the

Minerals industry and provide a networking forum for those with an interest in the sector. It attracts a high media profile. The MMC aims to provide a forum for discussion of matters of interest and importance to the mining industry, and has attracted a wide range of guest speakers over the years. It centres on six luncheon events in Melbourne per year, each with a featured Guest Speaker and each attracting at least 600 guests. The Melbourne luncheons are interspersed with evening sessions where the CEOs of small to mid cap mining companies speak in a forum known as the ‘Cutting Edge’ series.

The MMC has also gone international, with an annual ‘Melbourne Mining Club in London’ event. The speaker in 2007 was Vale’s Jose Martins while in 2008 it was BHP Billiton’s Marius Kloppers and in 2009 Xstrata’s Mick Davis. The 2010 speaker was Rio Tinto’s Tom Albanese and in 2011 Anglo American’s Cynthia Carroll addressed a gathering of 550 members and guests. In 2010, the MMC also travelledto Shanghai (as part of the World Expo) where our speakers were Tom Albanese and China Minmetals’ Zhou Zhongshu.

The Club’s Patron is Sir Arvi Parbo.

All surplus funds from MMC events are donated to the education foundations of both the Minerals Council of Australia (Victoria) and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. To date, almost A$500,000 has been donated to these causes.

The Steering Committee comprises mining industry specialists who act in an honorary capacity. The Secretariat is provided by the Minerals Council of Australia

A Message from GMC Global CEO - FY2012

10 years on and going strong, GMC is cementing its market position as the consultancy of choice for some of the most respected mining industry professionals and companies. With all your valuable contributions, our Company has seen an unprecedented and sustainable growth in the last 2 years. With some 65% of our FY2012 work being already contracted, we are looking at increasing our global footprint and expanding our Learning and Education, Management Consulting, as well as Supply Chain integration services offerings. Our long term client relationships and programs are allowing GMC to identify, deliver and continuously support the various business improvements for our mining clients while providing all GMC personnel with tremendous professional opportunities around the world.

I take this opportunity to share with you the refined GMC Global Vision which we feel describes very accurately the heart and soul of our unique organisation.

Our vision states, ‘To be recognised as the preferred consulting partner to the mining industry’.  The vision sends a strong message of GMC’s commitment to the Global mining industry and it stipulates that we want to be recognised by others as the preferred consulting partner to the mining industry. To be recognised as a trusted partner, we have to earn it first and maintain the status diligently. We are striving to do so by following at all times the ‘GMC Way’ governing principles:

1.       We deliver quality in everything we do

2.       We never neglect the details

3.       We conduct peer quality reviews continually

4.       We have fun while working

5.       We deliver on our commitments

6.       We follow and practice our code of conduct

7.       We focus on sustainable results

8.       We always listen to our people, partners & clients

9.       We lead by example

10.    We strive for success

11.    We are responsible and diligent

During the recently conducted surveys of the GMC Personnel it has become very evident that the growth of GMC is now requiring us to provide an extra focus on two key strategic imperatives: Organisational Development and Wellbeing (People focus) and GMC Methodology Enhancement (services delivery and internal GMC processes focus). During the last GMC Board meeting it was agreed that two Board members will champion the two critical initiatives: Peter McCarthy, the Board Chairman will champion the Methodology Initiative with Tom Hynes being the Executive Management Team member responsible for the initiative delivery and John Murray will champion the Organisational Development and Wellbeing initiative with myself being accountable for the initiative delivery. It is envisaged the two initiatives will be completed by end of September 2011.

In the last 18 months we have seen a developing trend within GMC of many of our valued and long term alliance contractors deciding to become GMC Employees.  This in my mind is a very positive and pleasing sign and a foundation block for GMC’s Culture development and growth.

Another trend worth sharing with you is the latest strategies of our clients to eliminate their reliance on contract labour hire companies.  The following extract from a CEO note to all personnel of our largest client describes my comment best:

Core activities: We currently have core activities that are outsourced to third parties.   Your plans should clearly identify such activities, as well as outline the path to in-source them, i.e. progressive reduction in both the number of contractors and their scope.”

It is my personal view that the growth in the labour hire companies is destabilising the mining industry in Australia, as it encourages an unsustainable growth of the contracting workforce. The unsustainable growth of contract labour hire takes an unfavourable advantage of the growth of the Australian mining industry by extracting both talented and skilled talent from the permanent workforce and not allowing for the professional development of the individual to continue as it would under the normal full time employment.   GMC has always taken a different approach and our strategy is to work with clients to identify, develop, coach, and support clients’ employees rather than merely providing backfill resources.  This strategic partnership is being recognised by some of our largest clients and it signals that the industry is no longer prepared to take the easy option out of just getting a contractor to perform a business critical role. GMC will continue to support the strategic client’s needs which might from time to time require GMC providing senior management resources to execute the specific requirements.

In summary, the future of the Global Mining industry and the future of GMC Global is very positive and will provide a significant number of opportunities for all GMC personnel.  Our Strategic Business Plan for the next 3 years sees GMC growing at a sustainable rate both geographically and through our core services offerings like Management Consulting and Learning & Education.

The rate of growth will never jeopardise our focus on supporting and developing our personnel and delivering the highest quality services to the growing Global mining industry.

I would like to thank you for all your contributions and wish you and your families a safe and rewarding fiscal year 2012.
